OI Can Toddle!
Charlotte France organised the ‘OI Can Toddle Walk’ inviting the local community in Worthing to take part in the toddle walk on 22nd July. There was a great turn out on the day, despite the typical British weather and even an appearance from a Disney princess and a minion! In total £485 was raised. Well done everyone who took part.
In Memory of Vicky Hartley
Also in July, Alex Hartley set off on his bike tour around France in memory of his late aunt Vicky. Over six days, dealing with blazing sun, strong wind, heavy rain and very tired legs Alex cycled a total of 520 kilometres and managed to raise over £700 for the Brittle Bone Society.
Climbing Mount Snowdon
In August, Kirsty Woodward and a group of others decided to take on the challenge of climbing Mount Snowdon, the highest mountain in wales! Kirsty describes the BBS as being a charity which is close to her heart and all of her efforts paid off as Kirsty managed to raise over £2000! Well done and a big thank you for all that took part and those helped to raise a great amount.
Late in August, Lucy’s troops tackled the new Queensferry crossing! Three year old Lucy and her troops including mum Julie Brown and uncle Jim who have both been involved in the BBS since the 1980s received the once in a lifetime chance to take part in the Queensferry walk for the opening of the new crossing. This was a fantastic effort for little Lucy and over £500 was raised for the BBS. Congratulations everyone that took part.
Tracy Portlock first got to know about the BBS through her friend Kirsty. Tracy wanted to fundraise for us and raise as much money as possible. Her daughter initially came up with the idea for a tandem skydive and where better to do it than in Mexico in September? The whole family got involved and raised a fantastic amount of over £1700!
Matt Kealey's grandparents Des and Shirley are life members and supporters of the BBS so it was no surprise to us in the office when Matt decided to get involved. Matt participated in a charity boxing match in London and has raised over £1400. This is a great achievement and it is great to have so many family members donating and raising money on our behalf.
Cardiff Half Marathon
This October BBS member Elanor Goodden and her friend Joanne Dunscombe ran the Cardiff Half Marathon to raise money for our charity. Thanks to these ladies efforts they have raised over £1000.
50 walks, wheels and wanders
And not forgetting our 50 walks – Over the course of a year, Cameron Allen, Yvonne Grant and Wilma Lawrie are completing 50 walks to celebrate the Brittle Bone Society’s 50thanniversary. The walks will all be completed just in time for our 50th celebrations in Dundee in August 2018. Already, there have been some great walks all over the Scotland, and even London! Almost £2000 has been raised so far and I’m sure the final figure will be fantastic!
Dr Paul Arundel and Prof Faisal Ahmed are all packed, booked, and ready to hit the road for the West Highland Way from 4th -7th May 2018 to mark our 50th. They are being joined by a few others to do the almost 100-mile march! BBS are hoping to plan a bit of a welcome home party so watch this space...
